Day one of a three day trip...
Anchorage is over the horizon, in fact, way over the horizon. Below is the west coast of British Columbia shrouded in a marine layer of clouds. My stubby #2 pencil and hand calculator says we will be arriving at Anchorage with 11,400 pounds of fuel, enough to try two approaches in the rain and fog, hold forty minutes, then on to the alternate airport, if needed. A glance at the navigation computer's fuel prediction indicates we will arrive with 11,600 pounds. Life is good; gray hair factor currently low.
My co-pilot is the son of a senior Captain (at this airline), a friend of mine. In fact, his Dad and I worked at a regional airline together. At that time, this kid was about seven (7) years old. Am I that old? I must be, because there he sits...

You must not be that old. I have seen some of the boys that are flying for a certain regional carrier and I often wonder who drove them to work that day because I doubt they were old enough to even have a drivers license. =)
Besides it isnt old... it is experienced...
qrxjbjusHi Dave,
If the rain and fog absolutely insisted you couldn't get into PANC, where would you divert to?
Hey Dave, a few months ago I asked you for some advice on instrument flying. Just wanted to say thanks again and that yesterday I got my instrument rating.
Also, your blog is awesome and I read it every chance I get.
Enjoy Alaska!
ian h, we would have gone to the airbase north of Anchorage 20 miles. It would have to be really low vis before we could not land, like less than 300 feet.
wesley, congrats on the new ifr ticket; it's not an easy thing to do. Now be careful out there. Remember, if I am behind you on final, I can only slow down to about 150 mph, so keep it moving.
Yes Sir. I don't think I will be heading to too many major airport's anytime soon, but if I do I will keep the speed up :)
increase miles per gallon, fuel saver, increase gas mileage
