Last night, after flying to the center of the Empire and back, we descended into the cradle of humanity (or so it seems), Los Angeles, for the first overnight of a four day trip. The hotel van was waiting; twenty minutes later... Redondo Beach, California. Oh, yeah! This place is another one of my favorite destinations on the airline's route structure. Anyone who says that they would never pay the inflated housing prices of So-Cal (possibly) has never been to Redondo Beach. If I had a spare million bucks, I would not hesitate one second.
There is something about this place that is, for the lack of a better word, exotic. So that I accomplish the most in the time allotted, I do not sleep late. The first stop is The Coffee Bean, and then down to the beach for a run along the surf line before the crowds arrive. The ocean smells wonderful in the morning, as in salty and cool. At the two mile mark, I enjoy sitting on the wet sand and watching the surfers for an hour. The sound of the surf is mesmerizing.
After retrieving my gym clothes, I walk three miles inland along the Pacific Coast Highway to a large commercial gym where the big boys/girls work out. I am one of the few pencil necks on the weight room floor. Holy Moly! Amazing physiques crafted from years of lifting heavy iron. I think I'll leave my top on today...
Back to the hotel for a nap before leaving paradise for points east.

Welcome to my neck of the woods, Dave! I work near LAX and live in Long Beach so Redondo is host to me a few times a week as I avoid rush hour (er, all hour) traffic. Glad to see you've discovered some of its charms as well.
Last week Redondo's King Harbor was hosting the "Black Pearl" and the cast and crew of Pirates of the Caribbean 3...exciting stuff. Hope you enjoyed your stay.
you should try the manhattan beach sand dune at sand dune park...
I second Manhattan Beach. And if you're ever near SNA, you'll really love Corona del Mar / Newport Beach, Balboa Penninsula, and the like.
Yeah, I was gonna say...the Balboa Peninsula (Newport Beach) is the one other place in SoCal that I wouldn't hesitate to drop a spare million or two.
But, as someone whose housing budget is about $1300/mo, I had a choice:
Rent a one bedroom apartment in SoCal.
Own a nice three bedroom townhouse in the Pacific Northwest.
Pretty easy choice.
I do miss being close to the beach though.
I live in Redondo and it's one of my favorite places. I tend to forget we're a tourist sight until I go to the pier and see the people wandering and shopping. Glad you had a good visit.
And I have lots of pictures of the Black Pearl as well as Johnny D, who is a really nice guy.
Shout out from Redondo!!!!
Used to live in SoCal. Towed banners there, often starting within a half mile of LAX and going south along Beaches Mahattan, Redondo, Palos Verdes, Circle the Queen Mary, then Seal, Huntington, Newport and Laguna. By far, Newport is the nicest place to hang out.
But I'd rather have a house at 6600 feet up on the Rim in Arizona with a runway in front (), instead of a 1Br condo at a crowded beach. It's a nice visit, though.
Dave,
Enjoying your blog immensely. Just curious ... is THIS (link below) why you refer to it as "Hotlanta"?

oh man what hotel do they put you up in? i live right on the beach in hermosa and i must agree some of the best beach on the west coast. next time you are out and have time let me know i would love to hear more over coffee. i must say though peets coffee is some really good stuff.
I have a friend that used to live in Redondo. We would ride bikes from there through Hermosa and Manhattan Beach to LAX and watch the 747's take off.
California is my favorite state and I would live there in a heartbeat. Maybe someday...an LAX domicile for an overseas route. And then I wake up!
Why be jealous of California having the Pacific? We're lucky enough have Tempe Town Lake in AZ.
Yeah I hate to break it to you but Tempe "Beach" park doesn't count as a beach. Nice try though. Great pics. Newport rocks!
