Position: Northwest of Big Bear
Altitude: 33,000 feet
We departed KSFO on schedule with 136 folks and are flying the southerly route to KMIA. The fire at Big Bear is quite impressive from our viewpoint. A thick smoke plume extends northward hundreds of miles. We are 6 1/2 miles above the surface, yet the plume looks close. That is an indicator of the sheer volume of smoke. Wow!
Soon, though, it is behind us and receding at 9 miles per minute. Ahead of us lies two thousand miles of beautiful skies, followed by a few hundred miles of thunderstorm infested skies between Pensacola and Miami.
We are only two weeks away from the best flying weather of the season... October thru the middle of November. It is six weeks of easy living for the pilots and the flight attendants. Schools are in session until the Thanksgiving break and the weather is taking a breather between thunderstorm season and the winter snows.
Where did the summer go?

What time were you over Big Bear? I was going by in my 340 at 17,500' at about 11:30 PDT. KLGB > AZ82
Nonstop or a stop in PHX? Sports charter perhaps?
Looking forward to that good weather. Training towards my CPL just outside of PHX at the moment and although the monsoon season is officially over its still been unsettled, gusting 20/25 most afternoons this last week which puts pay to most solo flights.
I'm curious Dave, when you pass by interesting sights on the ground (the one's you eventually blog about here), do you make an announcement to your passengers as well? I personally always loved it when the captain would point out landmarks, sights, interesting artifacts, etc. while flying.
Of course, nowadays with DirecTV and in-flight movies, I'm assuming the passengers simply prefer not to be bothered, unfortunately.
Nope. Just me on my way to my house at Mogollon Airpark.
Can you, Dave, or anyone else give me an idea what I -- a white-knuckle passenger -- can look forward to on a flight from SFO to CDG in mid-January?

eddwen- I can't remember where I was 30 minutes ago
anon 1118- non-stop
moe- nope. PAX don't like it anymore because of reasons you state. Too bad...
anoa 550- where is cdg? I can't find the IACO locater.
CDG is the IATA for Paris-Charles De Gaulle...ICAO its LFPG
anon 407- well, if you are like me, center seats in the back of a whale for 13 hours, you'll probably be looking at the back of someone's head, eating pre-packaged food, and trying to watch movies on a small screen 8 feet away.
I guess I'm Anon 407. Actually, I'm booked for a window seat on an Airbus A340, but I've been "relocated" away from my chosen seat on occasion. I had more in mind what I might expect in the way of shake, rattle and roll across the pond at that time of year than cuisine or in-flight entertainment. As a passenger I don't know all those IATA and IACO codes, just the designation they put on my luggage and ticket. Thanks!
